Home Instructions Following Root Canal Therapy

  1. A temporary filling was placed in your tooth. If you feel the temporary has been dislodged, notify the clinic immediately so the filling may be replaced. Failure to do so may jeopardize success.
  2. An appointment should be made to see your dentist to replace the temporary filling with a permanent restoration (between 2-8 weeks from today). Gold or porcelain crowns are often required.
  3. Favor chewing foods on the opposite side of the mouth. Avoid hard foods such as ice, candy, nuts, etc. on the treated tooth until a final restoration is completed by your dentist.
  4. Pain in your gums may persist up to one week following your appointment. This may be alleviated with warm salt-water rinses. Pain in the tooth may persist for up to 8 weeks following the root canal. Inflammation in the jaws usually takes 1-2 weeks to heal.
  5. If swelling or severe discomfort occur, please contact this office at 883-7668. If severe pain or swelling, not controlled by medication, occurs after business hours Dr. Massey can also be reached at (417) 894-7651.
